Sephora Opens New Location
Sephora opened a new store in Santa Clara, allowing everyone in the area to experience the many worlds of color, well-being and fragrance. As the ultimate beauty authority, Sephora offers all beauty junkies, makeup mavens and spa addicts a new way to shop.
To celebrate the grand opening, the American Cancer Society and Sephora hosted a fund raising event with live music, hors d’oeuvres and pampering including free makeup consultations, manicures, hand massages and drawings for free product giveaways.
The 5,000 square foot store is located on the first level of the Westfield’s Valley Fair Shopping Center near the Center Court in the southern end of the mall, between Macy’s and Nordstroms.
This beauty mecca carries over 300 brands and has more than 68 stores nationwide. Sephora Santa Clara houses more than 270 women’s fragrances, 25 makeup brands, 50 skin care lines and over 120 different style hair accessories...a virtual paradise of endless beauty options.

“Sex, Scents and Cinema”
The Annette Green Museum at The Fragrance Foundation is presenting its most provocative exhibition yet, “Sex, Scents and Cinema.” It examines the role of fragrance in the 20th century.
“Sex, Scents and Cinema” chronicles the pivotal role fragrance has played in both character and plot development in the movies,” said Annette Green, president of The Fragrance Foundation and the Museum. “It is fascinating to see how often fragrance has long been used to create a certain mood in a film. It is wonderfully depicted in a fabulous video, which is on view in the Museum’s screening room. Noted film critic and author Rex Reed lent his expertise and access to his film archives to the creation of the video. He is also the narrator. Posters and stills of the films are on display throughout the exhibit.”
The exhibit also features the fragrances selected from The Fragrance Foundation’s survey, “What fragrance spells “Sexy” to you?” asking celebrities and the public to name the sexiest fragrance they have ever worn, and the sexiest fragrance their significant other has ever worn. The survey was posted on Cosmopolitan.com, fragrance.org, and in Sephora and select Parfumerie Douglas stores.
The use of fragrance is so ubiquitous in cinema that it has become visual shorthand for a character’s intentions and feelings. Onscreen, a woman who lightly applies a fragrance is interpreted as confident, but a woman who uses liberal amounts of perfume is perceived as a seductress. Given the symbolic link between a woman and her perfume that has been established, the act of a character smashing her perfume bottle on screen signifies deep emotional distress. Actresses such as Mae West and Audrey Hepburn were muses for some of this century’s best-selling fragrances, and movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor successfully developed their own perfumes based on their legendary on and off-screen allure.

A Little Black Dress for a Big Cause
The Little Black Dress Against Breast Cancer is an on-line charity auction inspired by Avon’s new fragrance, Little Black Dress, set to launch in the U.S. in October.
The auction will feature “little black dresses” that have been contributed by celebrities in support of the breast cancer cause. Celebrities have reached into their own closets to donate personal favorites, one-of-a-kind designs or dresses that have been worn on stage and screen. All proceeds will go to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade to fund access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer. The auction will take place on Ebay.com from October 1 to 10. Celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Brooke Shields, Debra Messing, Megan Mullaly, Jenna Elfman, Leah Remini, Lisa Rinna, Susan Sullivan, Gillian Anderson, Emme, Jill Scott and Holly Robinson Peete, among others have teamed up for the event.
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the U.S., and the leading single cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. Early detection offers the best chance for successful treatment.
Celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch is playing an active role in the on-line charity auction. Bloch, whose mother died from the disease in 1996, has helped by reaching out to his friends in Hollywood to donate dresses. “While I was not blessed with the hands of a surgeon or the skills of a researcher, I will do what I can to further the progress in finding a cure,” says Bloch.

Key Issues Addressed at TFWA Summit
Tax Free World Association held its second annual Management Committee Meeting in Cannes to review the Tax Free Asia Pacific exhibition and develop plans for its TFWA World Exhibition in October.
The Tax Free Asia Pacific 2001 exhibition was acknowledged as the best event organized by TFWA to date in the region. Feedback from exhibitors and visitors was very positive, with particular mention of the TFAP Conference, the various events in the sporting calendar, and the social program.
The exhibition itself, including exhibitor quality, and the related services, such as on-site registration, signage and the Guide, received general approval, with 92 percent of buyers either satisfied or very satisfied with their visit.
TFWA announced that several new exhibitors will be attending TFWA World Exhibition for the first time this year, including Shiseido, Kanebo, and Torrente.
The sporting program will see the introduction of jogging along the paths of St. Marguerite Island across from Cannes. In keeping with the cultural heritage of the venue, visitors will have the opportunity to try their skill at petanque, a sport indigenous to the south of France, which will be played along the Croisette.
Finally, the management of TFWA expressed satisfaction that their joint venture with IAADFS, “Understanding the Travelling American” was deemed to be living up to the expectations of the trade by presenting excellent speakers and bringing relevant information to the fore to help operators and suppliers improve sales in this region.
“We have covered a lot of ground at this meeting,” said Erik Juul-Mortensen, TFWA President. “The Management Committee are delighted that the TFAP exhibition was such a success, but rather than rest on our laurels, we are already putting plans in place to develop the event further in 2002.
